Ultrasound

What is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound or sonography is an imaging modality that uses high frequency sound waves to produce images of the human body. This is achieved through the use of a small transducer probe placed in direct contact with the patient’s skin, which emits and receives sound waves that are reflected off the structures of the body.

How long does it take?

Scan’s can take from 15 to 30 minutes depending which area of the body is imaged.

Is the radiation safe?

There is no ionising radiation involved with ultrasound and is considered a safe modality.

Is there any special preparation?

You may be required to change into a gown for the procedure. Some scans require you to fast or have a full bladder for your appointment. You will be notified of any preparation required when booking your scan.

What to bring to your appointment

When attending for your appointment, you will need to bring the following items with you:

  • your Medicare Card
